About us

The Symphony Orchestra of Sliven was founded in 1933 by a group of enthusiastic musicians under the leadership of the conductor and composer from the town of Sliven Petar Stratev. These people naturally carried on the old musical traditions in Sliven, coming from the period of the Bulgarian National Revival - the first orchestra was founded in 1868.

The Orchestra has functioned as a professional musical institute since 1969. The conductor Stefan Basmadzhiev, a graduate of the Music Academy in Berlin, has made great contribution to the successful growth of the orchestra during the period 1969-1982. Regular conductors of the orchestra have been Nikolai Nikolaev, Еmil Tabakov, Hristo Ignatov, Veselin Baychev, Vladimir Kiradzhiev, Yovcho Petrov, Alexey Izmirliev, Andrey Andreev, Stefan Nedyalkov. Dimitar Karaminkov has been principal conductor of the orchestra since November, 1993.

Works of all styles and periods are included in the repertoire of the Sliven symphony orchestra - starting with classical works by Corelli, Vivaldi and Bach and finishing with Bartok, Shostakovich and Stravinsky. The works of Bulgarian composers, like Pancho Vladigerov, Lyubomir Pipkov, Petko Stainov, Veselin Stoyanov, Alexander Raichev, Pencho Stoyanov, Mihail Petkov, Marin Goleminov and many others, have earned a permanent place

in the repertoire of the orchestra.

The Sliven orchestra concert performances are connected with the work of the most outstanding Bulgarian artists - Mincho Minchev, Georgi Badev, Anatoli Krastev, Yovcho Krushev, Nikolai Evrov, Atanas Kareev, Mila Georgieva, Stoyka Milanova, Evgeniya-Maria Popova, Stefka Evstratieva, Alexandrina Pendachanska, Alexandrina Milcheva, Hristina Angelakova, Pavel Gerdzhikov, Tatyana Shivarova, Gena Dimitrova, as well as many foreign guest artists. Conductors from Germany, Russia, Poland, Greece, Italy, Austria, Brazil, England, Korea and other countries have appeared as guest conductors with the orchestra.

During the international summer academy, held in Varna, the orchestra worked under the guidance of the great conductor and pedagogue professor Karl Osterayher - Austria.

The Sliven Symphony Orchestra has taken part in the festivals "New Bulgarian music", "Young Bulgarian music", "December Musical Nights" - Sofia and has completed many successful tours in Germany, Ukraine, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, Greece, France.

The Orchestra has functioned as an Opera symphony orchestra until 1990 and its repertoire consisted of a great number of famous opera titles like works by Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, etc. 

Since 1984 the Orchestra has established integrated relations with the State Music Academy - Sofia, and since 1988 - with the Music High schools in Burgas and Stara Zagora. On the basis of their cooperation have been accomplished the productions of "The Daughter of the Regiment" by Donizetti, "The two pedagogues" by Mendelssohn, "The Barber of Seville" by Rossini, "The Desolate Water-mill" by Georgi Atanasov-Maestroto, "Madame Butterfly" by Puccini, "The Merry Wives of Windsor" by Otto Nicolai, "The Marriage of Figaro" and "The Abduction from the Seraglio" by Mozart, etc.

The Orchestra has realized, together with students from the State Music Academy - Sofia and the Academy of music, dance and fine arts - Plovdiv, and together with "Svetoslav Obretenov" Bulgarian National Choir and "Dobri Chintulov" Mixed Choir, many significant symphonic and cantata-oratorio compositions.
